Mathematics Course Placement
In order to qualify to take a Math department course at the University of Missouri, students must have one of the following:
NOTE: Statistics, Financial Planning, or other math-related courses offered outside the Math department do not fall under the above guidelines. Check with the appropriate department for prerequisite requirements for those courses.
For New Students Enrolling Fall 2013
You must complete the ALEKS assessment no later than April 9 to be registered on time in an appropriate fall class schedule.
Although the ALEKS assessment will still be available for you to complete after April 9, you may be unable to sign up for some FIGs (and certain housing options) if your assessment is not completed by that date. |
This requirement applies to all students, regardless of your major, ACT or SAT math subscore, college credit earned (AP, IB, dual credit, etc.) or FIG status. It will take up to two business days for your ALEKS assessment score to appear on your MU records. Completion of the ALEKS assessment by April 9 is essential in order to be eligible for some FIGs (and certain housing options) based on their course requirements.
You will login to take the assessment online through the links on the right, and there is no fee or registration required. In case you are not satisfied with your score on the ALEKS assessment, you will be given the chance to take the assessment up to five times. In addition, there is a free online study/review package that you can use to review and prepare for the ALEKS assessment and your upcoming math course at MU. In most cases, your score on the ALEKS assessment will determine your math course placement.
For Current Students
Do I Need to Take the ALEKS assessment?
To determine whether you are required to take the ALEKS assessment, use the following guidelines:
FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN, FALL 2013:
All students must complete the ALEKS assessment no later than April 9 to be registered on time in an appropriate fall class schedule. This requirement applies to all students, regardless of your major, ACT or SAT math subscore, college credit earned (AP, IB, dual credit, etc.) or FIG status.
If you missed the April 9 deadline, or if you wish to retake the assessment to improve your score, you can login at any time to take the assessment. Please complete your assessment at least 2 business days prior to your Summer Welcome session.
FOR ALL OTHER STUDENTS:
- Determine what Math course(s) are required for your intended major. If you are uncertain about the requirements, check with your major department or in the University course catalog.
- Do you have credit for the required course(s)? (Credits earned from MU or from transfer/dual/AP/IB credit.) If you already have credits for the required course(s), then you will not need to take the ALEKS assessment.
- Do you have credit for the prerequisite course(s)? (Credits earned from MU or from transfer/dual/AP/IB credit.) It is recommended that you take the ALEKS assessment in order to determine whether you are prepared for the next level Math course you plan to take.
- Is Math 1100 (College Algebra) the only Math department course required for your major? If the answer is Yes, then check to see if you have a College Algebra Exemption. If you have an Exemption, you will not need to take the ALEKS assessment, because you will not be required to take a Math course while at MU. If the answer is No, then you are required to take the ALEKS assessment.
- Still not sure? Check with your academic advisor to find out more, or just go ahead and take the ALEKS assessment to have a score on record. The assessment is online, and you can take the assessment up to five times for free.
What if I miss the April 9 deadline for ALEKS?
If you missed the April 9 deadline, or if you wish to retake the assessment to improve your score, you can login at any time to take the assessment. Please complete your assessment as soon as possible, or at least 2 business days prior to your Summer Welcome session.
What if I have a College Algebra Exemption based on ACT/SAT Scores?
An exemption from College Algebra will only qualify you to take any course outside the Math department that has Math 1100 as a prerequisite.
If your major requires you to take any other courses within the Math department, you will be required to take the ALEKS assessment in order to place into the appropriate level of Math course. A College Algebra exemption is not considered to be a prerequisite for any Math department course (not even Math 1100). Some students who earned a College Algebra exemption may still need to take Math 0110 or 1100 before proceeding to higher level Math department courses.
What are the Deadlines for Completing the ALEKS assessment?
- If you are an incoming freshman/transfer student for Fall 2013, please complete the ALEKS assessment by April 9 in order to be eligible for priority enrollment in a class schedule for fall.
If you missed the April 9 deadline, or if you wish to retake the assessment to improve your score, you can login at any time to take the assessment. Please complete your assessment at least 2 business days prior to registration for a Math course.
- If you are a returning student, please complete the ALEKS assessment by the following dates:
- For Summer or Fall 2013 classes: at least 2 business days prior to registration for a Math course.
